RENO REUNION SUMMARY
SEPTEMBER 2,3 & 4, 2003

The event was held over three days and a good time was had by all.  We had a BI-level hospitality room, the 1st floor being used as a greeting room and the upper room had 15 tables where groups could get together for conversation and snacks.  The Association paid the entire costs of the room, finger food, and drinks including the beer.  My intention from the beginning was to have the members pay for only the dinner with the Association picking up all other costs while maintaining at least a $2000 balance in the Association account.  We did this and more, as you will see later in the report.

The Hospitality room was well attended all three days and everyone agreed it was a very nice facility that was perfect for the event.  The two level rooms really worked well as it provided a place to greet newcomers while also providing on the upper floor a really comfortable arrangement to sit and talk with our shipmates.

The Cocktail party and Banquet was held Wednesday night in a very comfortable setting that was sized just right for our party.  We filled it up nicely.  The food was very good and nicely presented with enough choice for every taste.  I sampled it all and found it all pretty tasty.
They cleared away the rubble quickly and quietly so we could get on with our business meeting.
The Banquet was nicely done, a big thanks to the Peppermill.

BUSINESS MEETING

Association President Pat Rafferty opened the meeting with a hearty welcome and thanked all attending for coming.  He introduced the reunion committee and turned the meeting over to Ron Waldron for the introduction of our special quests Norm Mueller (SS194) and Capt Jim Strong the first XO of Dragon.  Dave Cornell led the introduction of crew members and their better halves.  Ron Waldron invited Norm Mueller from the first Seadragon SS 194, he is still a chipper, full of pep guy who told us how proud he was to have served and glad to be in Reno to share in the Seadragon's glory.  Captain Jim Strong was up next and highlighted the Seadragon's long career and her major accomplishments.

Ron Waldron gave a summary of Association activities for the past two years and once again asked for our help in locating remaining shipmates.  He pointed out that just six short years ago Larry Yano started the first reunion with just 40 names and from that we have grown the list to over 1200.  It was pointed out we don't really know how many there were in her 25 year career so we'll keep looking.  Ron suggested that you keep checking the web site roster to see if you can dredge up a name that we have missed.

Bob Scheide Sect/Treas for the Association presented the two-year financial report to the crew for comment and approval.  The cost of running the association per year has been about $700 with most of the cost occurring in website fees, postage and copying costs.  We started the two-year cycle with approximately $2300 after refunding dinner fees to those who could not make it to Peoria.  The members approved the report. Bob stated his goal was to turn over to the incoming treasurer at least the same amount as we started the period with.

Bob Scheide led the nomination and selection of officers for the coming year the results are as follows:
Dave Cornell, President
Jim Fox, Vice President
  Tom McCabe, Sect/Treas
Ron Waldron will remain as Chief Headhunter
Bob Scheide will remain as Webmaster

Ron Waldron and Bob Scheide assisted by Tom McCabe proceeded to give out the loot.
We had a 50/50 drawing and a separate door prize pot.  The 50/50 resulted in a first prize of $250, which was half the take and the Association kicked in two additional prizes of $30 each.
Next up the door prize drawing.  We had a ton of stuff, including a brass plaque, 4 really nice pictures of Seadragon with Diamond Head in the background, 6 really cool T-Shirts, 21 artist renditions of several significant Seadragon events. The drawings dragged out a little too long mainly because some members kept winning and we had to redraw a new name to protect the innocent.

Dave Cornell our new President, thanked the reunion committee for their hard work, thanked all who attended the reunion and that we had, had a very nice event.  We then discussed where and when the next reunion would be and it was decided we would stay linked with the USSVI and meet in Kansas City, MO in 2005.  The dates are not known yet but some consideration will be given to having the dinner on or closer to the weekend to facilitate crewmembers that are still working a chance to attend.  Dave intends to have a very active Presidency and will work hard for the organization.  Dave then introduced Richard (DOC) Morin for the closing prayer.

FINANCIAL DATA FOR REUNION

Total Cost = $7100
Cocktail and Banquet = $5380
3 days hospitality room = $1720

Dinner fees collected = $4200 (approx)
Money paid by Association from dues/registration fees = $2900

It was the intent of your reunion committee not to make money at the reunion we do not need require a lot of money to operate and we make what we need from Association dues and shipsstore sales.  We were able this time to completely pay for 3 days of hospitality room supplies including the beer from Association funds, which I'm told was among the  fews places you could get free beer, and all that comradship to boot.  Loot taken in on the two raffles will assure the treasury will have lots of room to operate in for the next two years.  Financially the reunion was a big success.

Thanks,Tiger Scheide
